Flossing is an integral part of any healthy oral hygiene routine at home. Flossing can help dental patients minimize the amount of plaque that is able to accumulate on, and thus attack, their teeth.

In today’s article our Toluca Lake dentists are going to help you optimize your flossing routine so that you can care for your smile optimally.

Here are some tips to get you started:

First, of all, make sure that you are using the right tools! When you are picking out floss, make sure that you choose a type that can move up and down the entire length of your tooth. Basically, you want to use a width of floss that is appropriate for your smile.

Keep in mind that it matters when you floss; the best time to floss is right before you brush your teeth at night. Following this schedule, you can disrupt plaque that has accumulated throughout the day, and then brush it off of your smile.

Using proper flossing technique can also help to take your smile to the next level. As you move the floss from tooth to tooth wiggle the floss both vertically and horizontally in order to dislodge as much plaque as possible. When you begin flossing, cut off a large length of floss. Then, move progressively down this length of floss as you go through your smile. And don’t forget about your gum tissue; as you floss between your teeth, move the floss gently down into the space where your gum tissue and teeth meet.

If you’ve fallen out of the habit of flossing, you’re not alone! Now is a great time to get back on track and start flossing every day again. Our Toluca Lake dentists can help you build an oral hygiene routine that works for you—just give us a call to get started!
