Don’t Skip Your Professional Dental Cleanings! Our Toluca Lake Dentist Explains Why

Written by Dr. McKay on Dec 10, 2014

The American Dental Association recommends that every dental patient see his or her dentist for a professional cleaning at least twice a year (or as recommended by your dental team). If you have been wondering why these semi-annual cleanings are so important, our Toluca Lake dentist office is here to give you more information.

When you come in for a professional dental cleaning, our dental team will perform a number of assessments in order to stay up to date on your dental health. For example, we will:

· Check your gum tissue for signs of periodontal disease

· Check your dental enamel for spots of decay and cavities

· Perform an oral cancer screening to detect any problematic or cancerous tissues

· Assess your teeth for spots of wear and tear which may indicate bruxism

It is important that you come in regularly for these assessments, because sticking to a schedule allows our dental team to identify any problems before they become severe. And like any health problem, a dental problem is generally most easily treated in its earliest stages.

And of course, during your dental appointment our team will thoroughly clean your teeth and gum tissues. We will remove calcified plaque (called tartar) from your mouth, which will help to prevent dental infections and decay.

Again, keeping these appointments regularly scheduled is crucial. Because plaque and tartar are constantly building up in your mouth, you need to see the dentist regularly so that your dental team can give you a clean slate (which you can then maintain at home until your next appointment).

If it has been a long time since you have had a professional dental cleaning, take this opportunity to re-start this good habit! Call our Toluca Lake dentist office to speak to our dental team and schedule your appointment!
