When you are ready to improve the alignment and the appearance of your natural smile, what treatment should you choose? Our Toluca Lake cosmetic dentists are here to help you decide!

In today’s short article, we are discussing the particulars of traditional orthodontic treatment and Invisalign, respectively. We hope that this information helps you feel more confident assessing your cosmetic dentistry options!

The first thing to know is that both Invisalign and traditional orthodontics are designed to move your natural teeth into better positions. While dental bonding and veneers cover your teeth to make your smile look better aligned, Invisalign and traditional braces actually move your teeth over time.

Now, the mechanisms by which they respectively move your teeth is pretty different.

If you use traditional braces, the dentist attaches metal brackets to your teeth. Then, these brackets are connected with a metal wire, that provides tension and torque to move the teeth.

When you choose Invisalign treatment, you will be outfitted clear plastic aligners that fit over your existing smile. These aligners apply the pressure necessary to move your teeth. Keep in mind that you won’t just have one aligner over the course of treatment; rather, our dentist will provide you with a new aligner every two or three weeks, so that your smile will keep moving in the right direction!

A key difference between these two treatments is that metal braces stay in place on your smile 24/7—you won’t be able to take the brackets on and off. Invisalign aligners, on the other hand, are totally removable, and, in fact, you will need to take them out when you eat, drink (other than water), and clean your smile.
