You know how your teeth feel after you have a professional cleaning? They feel fresh, slick, and clean. After a professional cleaning your teeth are fresh and plaque-free. The trick to maintaining a healthy smile for years to come is to maintain clean teeth for as long as possible between professional dental cleanings. So what can you do?

As you’d imagine brushing your teeth is the cornerstone of a good at-home dental hygiene routine. Make sure to brush at least twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Brushing help eliminate the plaque that has built up on your teeth throughout the day.

Another important thing to do is floss. Flossing, like brushing, cleans plaque from your teeth. However, plaque is effective for removing plaque from those difficult to reach places in your mouth, including between teeth and along the gum line.

To boost your plaque fighting power, you can include an antimicrobial mouthwash to freshen breath and kill more bacteria. Mouthwashes are effective for use throughout the day as well—some patients use a mouthwash after a midday meal to minimize the amount of plaque that build up after eating.

Diligent dental care at home can really help you keep your teeth bright and healthy between dental visits. Make sure to follow a daily dental hygiene plan to prevent cavities and gum disease—you’ll be glad you did!
