Toluca Lake Dentist Shares Tips On Caring For Your Smile During Cold and Flu Season

Written by Dr. McKay on Apr 6, 2021

Many of our patients find it difficult to maintain optimal oral health when they are under the weather. This is totally understandable, and the good news is that there are a few things that you can do about it. Our Toluca Lake dentists recommend that you…

Stay Hydrated

It’s always important to drink plenty of water, but when you’re ill it’s even more critical. Your body needs to be well-hydrated in order for your immune system to function optimally. Plus, keeping your mouth moist encourages saliva production, and saliva works to re-mineralize teeth and destroy bacteria.

Gargle Regularly

Many patients experience something called “post-nasal drip” when they are ill; this occurs when mucous from your sinuses makes its way down to the back of your throat. Gargling with warm water or warm salt water throughout the day will help to clear away this build-up and reduce throat irritation.

Minimize Sweets

Any time that you consume a lot of sweets or refined carbohydrates, you are giving harmful oral bacteria extra fuel to grow and multiply. If you’re already under the weather, make an effort to cut back on sweet snacks, since your body is already working overtime to fight pathogens.

Be Aware of Stomach Acid

If you are so sick that you are vomiting, then there are some additional steps you should take to protect your smile. When you throw-up, your mouth becomes coated with the contents of your stomach, and this includes stomach acid. Acid is particularly harmful for your dental enamel and gum tissues, so you want to get into the habit of gently rinsing your mouth after you get sick.
