Toluca Lake Invisalign Dentist Explains the Cleaning Protocol for Invisalign Dental Appliances

Written by Dr. McKay on Aug 4, 2014

In the old days of orthodontic treatment, patients had to deal with metal brackets and wires in order to get the straight, perfected smiles they wanted. While metal braces are effective, many patients disliked them because they were difficult to keep clean. Metal braces are prone to trapping food particles and contributing to plaque and tartar build-up. That’s why our Toluca Lake cosmetic dentist office offers Invisalign as an easier, more hygienic alternative to traditional braces.

Invisalign is generally more hygienic than traditional orthodontic treatments because…

· It makes it easier to keep your teeth clean during treatment

· The dental appliances themselves are simple to disinfect

Here’s how it works…

Invisalign aligners are dental appliances that fit easily into your mouth. They are molded from plastic resin—you simply pop them out to eat and clean your teeth. Now, because these aligners are completely removable, you’re actually able to floss and brush your teeth normally throughout the treatment process. Likewise, you can maintain your regular schedule of professional dental cleanings.

As you brush and floss your teeth, you can also take time to clean your plastic aligners. The aligners should be cleansed with Invisalign Cleaning Crystals—these crystals are specially formulated to gently and quickly remove plaque from top and bottom aligners.

If cleaning crystals aren’t available you can also use a soft bristled toothbrush to buff away debris and plaque. Take care to clean your aligners with warm, not hot water. Hot water may damage the plastic resin—causing it to crack or warp.

With regular care, your Invisalign aligners will stay clean and clear throughout treatment. It’s so easy to keep your smile in tip-top shape with Invisalign—you’ll actually be able to show off your increasingly perfect smile, rather than hiding your teeth behind metal brackets and wires.
