Toluca Lake Pediatric Dentist Helps Young Patients Understand Key Oral Health Principles

Written by Dr. McKay on Apr 12, 2016

Our Toluca Lake dentists want to help all of our patients achieve and maintain optimal oral health for years and years. We know that one of the best things that we can do as family dentists is to instill good habits into our young patients, so that they carry these oral hygiene habits into adulthood. In today’s article we are going to be talking about some of the things that we emphasize when working with pediatric patients.

If you have a little one at home, you can reinforce this information during daily dental cleanings!

1. We develop new plaque every single day

It is very important for children to understand that bacteria are always feeding and growing. We know that we can’t stop plaque altogether, so instead we do our best to clear plaque off of our smiles on a regular schedule; this is why we clean our teeth morning and night. Remember: you should brush and floss your smile even if you don’t think it feels dirty!

2. Preventive care helps us avoid problems

The fast, easy things that we do to clean our smiles every day can help us avoid painful dental problems down the road. Nobody wants to suffer from a painful and ugly cavity—let’s take steps now to avoid them!

3. Perfect your technique

The way that we clean our smiles matters; talk to your dentist about the most effective way to clean your teeth and gums. In general, you want to use small circular motions to brush your teeth. When brushing, do not apply too much pressure, as this can actually hurt your enamel and oral tissues. Also, try to brush for at least two minutes every tie that you brush.
